DAY 9, 10- NORTH OF ALBUQUERQUE NM PETROGLYPHS
SET UP CAMP; VISIT ANCIENT PETROGLYPHS; ALBUQUERQUE
We had one solid travel day from Las Cruces to Albuquerque— about 250-300 miles. Set up camp north of Albuquerque in a town called Bernadillio. It’s about 5 miles north of Albuquerque proper.
Is this a Joshua Tree?😶 it’s over my head as I writeThe weather is cool and dry. Dry desert winds and rain in the afternoons and evenings. The wind is seriously strong. When you wake up here in the morning and get your camp stuff together it is all nice and dry and cool.
Travel between Las Cruces and Albuquerque is very desolate high plains desert. There really aren’t even nearly enough gas stations!
Our first full day here in the Albuquerque area we went to see some of the Native American rock drawings near the mountains. Commonly called petroglyphs, they are formed by ancient artists scraping and chipping off the outside lava layer of rocks to create spiritual drawings
I took a couple of the shorter hike up into the lava fields where they have obviously been a lot of landslides. And one of these pictures you’ll see where the rocks actually came down on top of the concrete stairs they had built for people to use to get started!I haven’t looked at the shop and I don’t know – – – but I want this to be a prickly pear cactus. If it isn’t a prickly pear cactus that’s what I’m going to name it and this is my blog
So you go on your hike one way only took like 10 or 15 minutes and the other one took about 40 minutes but most of that was stopping and looking at stuff. You can see the petroglyphs here below. These were scratched into the lava between four and 800 years ago by the ancient pueblo native Americans
That’s probably the best one I was able to find on my second leg of the hike
This is what I was talking about. There’s a petroglyph on this boulder. It came down in an avalanche and rolled down to rest upon the concrete steps they had put to help people get to one of the levels.
I’ve mentioned the desert flowers before. I don’t know what this one is but it’s just striking with its color and beauty
